G20

The G20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). The forum is used to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

The G20, which was formed in June 1999, consists of the world's largest economies. The G20 Summit is held once every year and usually sees the participation of each member's head of government or state, finance minister, and foreign minister, among other high-ranking officials.

The first G20 summit was held in Berlin. Canadian finance minister Paul Martin was chosen as the first chairman and German finance minister Hans Eichel hosted the inaugural meeting.

The 20 members of G20 are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

Watch: Spouses of world leaders dressed in Indian attire for G20 dinner

Spouses of several world leaders attended the G20 dinner hosted by the Indian President Droupadi Murmu, wearing traditional Indian attire. The UK's first lady, Akshata Murthy wore a vibrant, multi-coloured gown. First lady of Japan Yuko Kishida wore a green and pink saree with a Chinese golden border. Mauritiun Prime Minister's wife, Kobita Ramdanee, wore an off-white saree, while the World Bank President's wife, Ritu Banga, chose a pastel coloured saree with a golden border.

Decision for another day: G20 chief coordinator on name change to 'G21'

When asked about changing the name from 'G20' to 'G21' after the inclusion of African Union (AU) to G20, Chief Coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that this a 'decision for another day.' The African Union became a permanent member of the G20 on Saturday, following a proposal put forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that was welcomed by all member countries.

PM Modi gets rousing welcome at Delhi's Bharat Mandapam as G20 Summit concludes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday evening arrived at the media centre in Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the G20 Summit. After holding a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders following the conclusion of the summit, PM Modi came to the media centre and greeted those present there. He waved at journalists, both from India and abroad, as camerapersons vied to click him. 

Khalistani extremism in Canada discussed: Justin Trudeau on meeting with PM Modi

On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about Khalistani extremism and "foreign interference" during their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi. Trudeau's remarks come against an increase in Khalistani activities in Canada and the country's soft approach towards the extremist elements.

The UK will provide USD 2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) which is the biggest single funding commitment the UK has made to help the world tackle climate change, which was established by 194 countries following the Copenhagen Accord at COP15.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, representing the G20 presidencies of last year and the next year, handed over a sapling each to current chair Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The symbolic ceremony took place at the start of the third session, 'One Future', of the G20 Summit. First Widodo handed over the sapling to Modi and then Lula da Silva presented the sapling to the prime minister, amidst applause from other leaders. The G20 leaders summit will draw to a close this afternoon with India handing over the G20 presidency to Brazil.
