Gandhi and Modi, two great personalities of India: South African Foreign Minister

South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making India an emerging economic power and for achieving a consensus declaration at the G20 Summit.

On the last day of the G20 Summit in Delhi, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were two "great personalities with important identities in the development of India".

Pandor further said that while Mahatama Gandhi brought the non-violent protest to India, Prime Minister Modi played a huge role in making India an emerging economic power.

"PMs before him played an important role. Somehow, he has been able to hone the identity of India and make it a brand," she added.

The South African Foreign Minister also congratulated the Indian G20 presidency for including the African Union (AU) in the Group of Twenty. However, she said, "I don't think the name of G20 should be changed to G21 as brand is important."

Despite conflicts amongst G20 negotiators over agreement on the Ukraine issue, the G20 leaders converged at the Summit and adopted the Delhi Declaration with a "100% consensus". "Today's era must not be of war," the declaration stated.

Talking about the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said, "All credit to the Sherpa of India for bringing consensus in bringing for New Delhi declaration."

"All credit to PM Modi for he wanted to achieve a consensus declaration," she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wrapped up the G20 Summit with ‘Swasti Astu Vishwa’ -- a prayer for peace -- as he handed over the gavel of G20 presidency to the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The slogan, which roughly translates to "let there be peace in the world", was given against the backdrop of the New Delhi Leaders' Summit Declaration adopted on Saturday, considered a breakthrough achievement at the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Modi, as he concluded the Summit, said in his closing remarks, “I declare the end of G20 summit. Hoping the roadmap of One Earth One family and One future be joyful. Thank you!”
