Chinese engineers attacked in Balochistan; Joe Biden to visit Maui to view wildfire damage; more

A convoy of Chinese engineers was attacked in Pakistan's Balochistan province by armed rebels on Sunday. According to local media reports, Pakistani security forces killed two terrorists in a gunfight. Two Pakistani security personnel were also injured when a convoy of engineers working for a Chinese construction company came under attack on Faqeer Bridge in Gwadar. As per sources, other terrorists fled the spot in an injured condition and an operation is underway to clear the area as gunfight continues.

Saudi peace talks on Russia-Ukraine crisis; Taliban orders salons in Afghanistan to close; more

Saudi Arabia is set to host talks in August about Ukraine, inviting Western states, Ukraine and major developing countries including India and Brazil, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. The meeting would bring senior officials from up to 30 countries, including Indonesia, Egypt, Mexico, Chile and Zambia, to Jeddah on Aug 5 and 6, the report said, citing diplomats involved in the discussion. Ukraine and Western officials hope that the talks, which exclude Russia, can lead to international backing for peace terms favoring Ukraine, it said.

Russia halted participation on Monday (local time) in the year-old UN-brokered deal that lets Ukraine export grain through the Black Sea, causing concern in poorer countries that price rises will put food out of reach. Hours earlier, a blast knocked out Russia's bridge to Crimea in what Moscow called a strike by Ukrainian sea drones, killing two people. Moscow said it was a terrorist attack on the road bridge, a major artery for Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.

Turkey allows Sweden to join NATO; Israel gripped by protests over judicial reform plans; more

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that Sweden’s Nato membership bid would not be ratified by Turkey’s parliament before October, but that he hopes for a swift ratification once lawmakers return from a break. Turkey on Monday withdrew its objections to Sweden joining the alliance, a step toward the unity that Western leaders have been eager to demonstrate in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The decision by Erdogan was a significant move toward Sweden’s membership and came after days of intensive meetings.
