Acute myocardial infarction or heart attack has become a worrying trend as more young people are at the receiving end of it.

While it was once thought to be an issue of the elderly, people under the age of 40, especially those in their 20s and 30s, are becoming prone to heart attacks.

Although there are several reasons that can cause heart disease, there are certain symptoms that the younger population, especially Gen Z (those between the ages of 9 and 24) should know about to maintain proper cardiovascular health.

Dr Gopi A, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Fortis Hospital, told IndiaToday.in that awareness about the early health signs of potential heart diseases is paramount among Gen Z, so they can take action as soon as possible.

"We are seeing younger people at a high risk of coronary artery disease these days. Preventive measures should be inculcated in that age group itself. Not that everyone is at risk, but precautions should be taken since more cases of cardiac arrests are being reported more often," said Dr Gopi.

The expert listed three main cardiovascular diseases that young people should know, which could help them steer clear of heart attacks later in life.

Blood pressure: "Hypertension is presumed to be uncommon in younger people. However, if anyone comes in with high blood pressure, they should be checked for cardiovascular health. Whatever consequences happen due to blood pressure are preventable to a large extent," said Dr Gopi.

Obesity: Childhood obesity is a major factor in an increase in cardiovascular disease in adulthood. "Education and all kinds of measures in diet to maintain a good body weight should be done," he added.

Mental health: "We all know that this age group undergoes intense competition, stress, depression, peer group pressure, substance abuse, drug addiction and non-recreational activities. They need to be made aware of it. You can always approach people and get help. A simple act of asking for help could prevent heart disease in the future," suggested Dr Gopi.

The expert shared that heart disease is the biggest killer in the world. "Over 17-18 million deaths every year that happen in the world are due to heart diseases," he said.

Preventive measures like exercising regularly, having a diet rich in fruits, whole grains and cereals, maintaining a healthy body weight and getting an adequate amount of sleep are some ways to keep the heart healthy. Alcohol and tobacco consumption should be avoided at all costs, cautioned Dr Gopi.
