Greece is currently grappling with catastrophic floods, the worst in its history, particularly impacting the agricultural region of Thessaly. The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, have resulted in at least six fatalities, with several people missing and dozens trapped.
The deluge has caused significant damage, washing away roads and bridges, disrupting power and water supplies, and leaving large areas without essential services.
The extreme weather events are attributed to human-induced global warming, which has intensified wildfires and flooding in Greece in recent years.
In response, the Greek government is implementing measures such as heightening river embankments, improving stormwater drainage, and increasing floodwater retention to mitigate future flooding risks. However, the situation remains critical, with more rain forecasted, potentially exacerbating the already dire conditions.
