Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dilip Ghosh on Sunday stirred a controversy after he said that 'India' will be renamed as 'Bharat' to remove the "sign of slavery" and those who do not like the name change can "leave the country".

The senior BJP leader made the controversial remark while speaking at the "Chai pe Charcha" with the party workers in West Bengal's Kharagpur.

“India will be renamed as Bharat. Those not liking it are free to leave the country,” he said.

In his interaction, Dilip Ghosh also attacked the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Communist Party of India (CPI) for opposing the renaming of the country and added, "My friends of the TMC might don't know why they are saying 'Bharat' or 'India', what is the history behind it. It is very difficult for CPM people too, those who have always been paying attention to foreign countries."

"Foreigners could not speak the name of different cities, so they changed their names. Now, all the names are changing back. India will become Bharat. Those who don't like it will go out," he added.

The BJP MP also promised to remove all the statues of foreigners from Kolkata.

"There were many statues of the British in many streets of Kolkata. Where are they now? When BJP comes to power, we will uproot them all and put them in Victoria Memorial House."

"The objects of the museum will remain in the museum, not on the streets. Our children will wake up in the morning and see that the faces of foreigners will not be followed,” Dilip Ghosh added.
