The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has achieved a significant milestone in maintaining an Air Quality Index (AQI) below 100 during the G20 Summit held in New Delhi. This accomplishment was the result of a dedicated effort by NDMC, involving various measures to ensure cleaner air and a healthier environment.

During the last five days ahead of the G20 Summit, NDMC focused on enhancing air quality in the region. Out of the 20 monitored locations in the NDMC area, AQI levels were below 100 in 17 locations, with only three locations being the exception.

One of the key strategies employed by NDMC was a thorough cleaning initiative that included roads and pedestrian pathways. This was carried out through a combination of methods, such as using water for deep cleaning and mechanical road sweeping.

Around 2,100 sanitation workers were actively involved in maintaining cleanliness. Among them, 1,000 workers were specifically assigned to clean the roads and market areas identified for the G20 Summit. These workers operated in three shifts —morning, afternoon, and night — to ensure round-the-clock cleanliness, sanitation, and an eco-friendly environment.

A significant aspect of the cleaning drive was the deep cleaning of 56 roads, involving the removal of silt from roundabouts and triangular islands. Additionally, both sides of footpaths along these roads were washed twice using six Pressure Jet machine water tankers.

Six Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS) were deployed to perform deep cleaning of road channels in the New Delhi area. This rigorous cleaning effort was aimed at reducing dust and improving air quality.

To combat dust and air pollution further, 13 vehicles were assigned to clear construction and demolition materials in the NDMC area. Four anti-smog guns were also deployed to suppress dust on roads and mitigate air pollution.

A substantial fleet of 36 auto tippers, 17 compactors, 10 open dumpers, and 3 loaders played a crucial role in garbage collection, including horticulture waste. This concerted effort was aimed at creating a garbage-free environment in NDMC.

To discourage littering, 450 pairs of new litter bins were installed at various marketplaces and roadsides, supplementing the existing 3300 litter bins.

During the monsoon season, NDMC's Horticulture Green Team undertook a tree plantation drive, adding 32 lakh shrubs and 3,100 tree saplings of different species to the New Delhi area. An additional one lakh potted plants were strategically placed in public areas, including roadsides, T-points, and roundabouts, with the goal of improving air quality and enhancing ecological balance.

NDMC's comprehensive efforts during the G20 Summit not only contributed to a cleaner environment but also showcased India's commitment to addressing air quality and environmental concerns on a global stage.
