India G20 Summit 2023 Highlights: PM Modi arrives at Bharat Mandapam, receives rousing welcome

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday lauded the government for making India's G20 presidency a "huge nationwide event".

"They actually made it a huge nationwide event. 200 meetings in 58 cities, a huge amount of action, and the conversion of the G-20 into a sort of people's G-20 with public events...civil society and think tank meetings all of these things were unprecedented," Tharoor said.

"But it's also an attempt by the ruling party to instrumentalize the G-20 as something that would turn out to be an asset for them politically," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the ‘Crafts Bazaar’ exhibition set up at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi on Sunday evening after the conclusion of the G20 Summit.

On the last day of the G20 Summit, US President Joe Biden said, "The partnership between India and the United States is rooted in Mahatma Gandhi’s principal of trusteeship – trusteeship that is shared between our countries and for our shared planet."
 
"Thank you, Prime Minister for bringing us here today," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the G20 Summit, on Sunday evening.

After holding a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders following the conclusion of the summit, Modi came to the media centre and greeted those present there.

He waved at journalists, both from India and abroad, as camerapersons vied to click him.

Amid cheers, Modi walked in the cavernous hall on the ground floor of the International Media Centre (IMC) which was all decked up.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

"We talked about ways to further cement trade and infrastructure linkages between India and Turkey," the Prime Minister wrote on X.

Speaking on the last day of the G20 Summit, President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "...We believe that any initiative that isolates Russia is bound to fail. Its success is a very little possibility. We believe that any step that may escalate the tensions in the Black Sea should be avoided... In order to support the global food security, food supply security, we are going to bring together the Food Supply Security Study Group, both Russia, Ukraine, as well as the United Nations, and with our stakeholders coming from the international community, we are going to have continuous talks..."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on X, posted about his meeting with African Union Chairperson Azali Assoumani.

He wrote, "Had a very fruitful meeting with Azali Assoumani. Congratulated him once again on African Union joining the G20 family. Comoros is vital to India’s SAGAR Vision. Our deliberations included ways to enhance cooperation in areas like shipping, trade and more."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit on Sunday. 

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, "Met PM Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. We discussed the full range of India-Canada ties across different sectors."

Talking about his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X, "A very productive lunch meeting with President Emmanuel Macron. We discussed a series of topics and look forward to ensuring India-France relations scale new heights of progress."

French President Emmanuel Macron said, "I thank PM Modi. Faithful to its principles, India did its utmost for the G-20 presidency to serve unity and peace and send across the message of unity while Russia is still waging its aggression on Ukraine..."

The French President also shared a photo of him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Instagram with the caption: The world is one family.

Speaking about the New Delhi G20 Leaders' Summit Declaration, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, "When they agreed to that, perhaps it was the voice of their conscience. Speaking frankly, we didn't expect that."

Lavrov further said, "Let me underline that we cannot isolate that paragraph (on Ukraine and Russia) from the rest of the work on the declaration. The main content of the declaration this year is all about the awakening of the Global South and the consolidation of the Global South that is truly willing for the G20 to work for its main goals..."

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida on Sunday extended his deep respect and appreciation to Indonesian President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for exercising outstanding leadership as chairs of the ASEAN and G20 Summits.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on says expressed his “gratitude to India for preventing attempts to politicise G20 Summit”.

“The West will not be able to remain a hegemony as we see new centres of power in world,” said Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on G20 declaration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday shared his remarks at the closing ceremony of the G20 Summit.

I would also like to mention the active role of the Indian presidency that has genuinely consolidated the G20 countries from the Global South for the first time in history. Our BRICS partners- Brazil, India, China, South Africa have been particularly active and thanks to these consolidated positions taken by the Global South countries to uphold and protect their legitimate interests," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a fresh push for reforms in global bodies including the United Nations, saying despite the increase in member states of the world body, the number of permanent members in the UN Security Council has remained the same.

Addressing the "One Future" session of the G20 Summit here, the prime minister said the world's 'new realities' should be reflected in 'new global structure'.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva said that he will be honoured to welcome all the G20 guests to Rio de Janeiro Summit in November 2024.

President of Brazil Lula da Silva revealed the priorities of its presidency. He said, “Brazilian presidency of the G20 has three priorities - First, social inclusion and fight against hunger. Second, energy transition and sustainable development in its three aspects...Third, the reform of global governance institutions. All these priorities are part of the Brazilian presidency motto which says 'Building a fair world and a sustainable planet'. Two task forces will be created - Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty & the Global Mobilisation against Climate Change."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a virtual session of the G20 in November and two-and-a-half months are left with India for the G20 presidency to be over. 

“I declare the end of G20 summit. Hoping The roadmap of One Earth One family and One future be joyful. Thank you,” PM Modi said.

Congratulating Brazil's President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the G20 gavel to him. 

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a record climate aid commitment as the G20 Summit in India nears its commencement, said the British High Commission in India on Sunday.

The UK will provide USD 2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) which is the biggest single funding commitment the UK has made to help the world tackle climate change, which was established by 194 countries following the Copenhagen Accord at COP15.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday hailed India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant for the 'Delhi Declaration' consensus, and said it was a "proud moment for India at G20".

Tagging Kant's remarks in an interview on how the consensus was achieved on the paragraphs on Russia-Ukraine, Tharoor said in a post on X, "Well done Amitabh Kant! Looks like the IFS lost an ace diplomat when you opted for the IAS!"

India's message of 'one earth, one family, one future' resonated strongly with all delegates at the G20 Summit, Gita Gopinath, said the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

"Congratulations Prime Minister Narendra Modi on presiding over such a successful G20," Gopinath posted on X late Saturday night.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said that the idea of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' has succeeded as G20 Summit has been “extremely successful”.

Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, said that the “presidency has done a very good job of being a voice of the global south”.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, representing the G20 presidencies of last year and the next year, handed over a sapling each to current chair Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The symbolic ceremony took place at the start of the third session, 'One Future', of the G20 Summit.

The third session of the G20 Summit, 'One Future', began after world leaders paid their homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murthy left Akshardham temple after offering their prayers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the inclusion of African Union in the G20 highlights its crucial role in global progress.

“The inclusion of African Union in the G20 underscores its pivotal role in global progress. We stand ready to further collaborate and boost our shared aspirations. We will keep working closely for global well-being.”

He also said that the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 is a significant stride towards a more inclusive global dialogue.

“We look forward to collaborative efforts that benefit not only our respective continents but also the entire world,” he tweeted.

"Traffic Alert: Controlled Zone 2 has been implemented and, consequently, buses will not operate on Ring Road between ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Sarai Kale Khan.  Buses will operate on the remaining stretch of Ring Road and the road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi," tweeted Delhi Traffic Police.

Security around Mahatma Gandhi Road in Delhi has been heightened as world leaders and head of delegations are scheduled for a visit to Rajghat in few minutes.  

On the second day of the G20 Summit, world leaders and delegations are scheduled to visit Rajghat individually in motorcades around 8:15 am. They will then partake in a wreath-laying ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi around 9:00 am. 

The leaders and delegation heads will then depart for Bharat Mandapam in individual motorcades and would arrive at the Summit venue around 10.15 am. 

There would be a tree plantation ceremony at South Plaza between 10.15 am to 10.30 am. 
 

Leaders and delegation heads are scheduled to arrive at Rajghat individually in motorcades around 8:15 am today to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi. They will be accompanied by a live performance of Mahatma Gandhi's cherished devotional songs.

However, rain is likely to play spoil sport as Delhi Radar showed persistence of clouds over Delhi and NCR region leading to possibility of continuation of light to moderate spell of rainfall for another 2-3 hours at a few places over Delhi and NCR.

United Kingdom Rishi Sunak, who is in India along with his wife Akshata Murthy to attend the two-day G20 Summit, visited the Akshardham temple on Sunday morning. Police officials said security has been tightened in and around the temple.

A senior police officer said pickets are already in place in the area and checking is being done due to the ongoing G20 Summit. Adequate security personnel will be deployed for the UK prime minister's visit, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 Summit on Saturday and discussed ways to deepen trade linkages and boost investment.
