Tamil Nadu Police arrests 8 over attempt to murder of DMK functionary

Tamil Nadu Police arrested eight and apprehended two handguns near Viruthachalam while they were fleeing after allegedly attempting to murder a DMK functionary.

The incident took place on Friday when 48-year-old Ilaiyaraja was leaving his farm and entering his vehicle when a group of men allegedly surrounded him and launched an attack. Two allegedly opened fire, leading to injuries to Ilaiyaraja. It is said that the DMK functionary managed to escape the attack and flee the spot in his car.

The police launched a probe after it formed special teams and traced the miscreants to Gopurapuram. The accused were identified as Adalarasu and Pugazhenthi, who were reportedly carrying the guns and were arrested along with Vijayakumar, Surya, Venkatesan, Saravanan, Arun and Satheeswaran.

Sources stated that Adalarasu and Pugazhenthi were related to Rajashekhar, who reportedly had personal enmity with the family of Ilaiyaraja regarding Panchayat board election, land transactions and village temple ceremonies had led to the planned attack.

Ilaiyaraja is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Chennai.
