A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death by his drunk friend when he tried to stop the accused from physically assaulting his wife in Delhi's Munirka area, the police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday around 4.30 am, when the victim, Robin Shrestha and her girlfriend tried stopping his friend, Jimmy (26), from abusing his wife. Robin had invited Jimmy and his wife to his house as the air conditioner in Jimmy's residence wasn't working and his wife and son were unwell.

According to the police, Jimmy consumed beer at Robin's house and began to verbally and physically abuse his wife. When Robin and his girlfriend intervened and asked Jimmy to stop, he retorted that they had no right to interfere in his family matters.

The argument escalated to the point where Jimmy, in a fit of rage, grabbed a knife and stabbed Robin in the chest. Robin's girlfriend and her friend immediately took him to Safdarjung Hospital. However, Robin succumbed to his injuries.

Jimmy, who hails from Manipur, was arrested by the police.

A PCR call about the stabbing incident was received at the Kishangarh police station on Saturday, following which a team was dispatched to the spot and the accused was nabbed. "Jimmy is a resident of Manipur and belongs to the Naga tribe," a senior police official said.

The accused has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
