Climate change, a significant concern for the global south, has prompted Argentina to call on developed nations to shoulder the responsibility of reducing global carbon emissions.

Argentina's ambassador to India, Dr Hugo Javier Gobbi, emphasised that emerging economies like India and Argentina should not be held accountable for the issue.

In an exclusive interview with India Today, Dr Gobbi highlighted that climate change is one of the world's most pressing challenges, disproportionately affecting the global south - a group of lower to middle-income countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

He revealed that Argentina suffered a loss of 25 billion dollars in agricultural produce last year due to an unprecedented drought caused by climate change, and urged developed nations, who have been major contributors to carbon emissions for decades, to provide resources to developing nations to combat this crisis.

Dr Gobbi also commended India's role in the upcoming G20 summit, stating that India's presidency will be pivotal for the global developmental agenda. He noted that India has proposed an ambitious agenda for the summit, addressing structural problems for a better future.

Key deliverables for the G20 summit include consensus on climate change, trade, and regulation of financial institutions.

The Argentinian embassy confirmed that President Alberto Angel Fernandez will attend the highly anticipated G20 summit, leading a delegation of around 40 people, including cabinet ministers and dignitaries.

This follows a meeting in July between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Argentinian counterpart Jorge Enrique Taiana, where they discussed measures to strengthen bilateral defence relations.
