BMW's mega reveal at the IAA Munich 2023 had two new-gen Mini cars - the Mini Cooper Electric and Mini Countryman. But the German automaker's prime showcase was the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which previews a fresh direction for the brand's future EVs. The car has dramatic design and is built on an all new platform.

The name Neue Klasse refers to the family of models which BMW launched during the 1960s. The brand will launch six Neue Klasse EVs, but while the design elements are expected to be shared, the platforms may differ as the models are likely to range from sedans to SUVs. The first of these will be the 3 Series class EV, which is what the brand showcased at IAA in concept form.

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse closely follows the design first seen with the i Vision Dee colour shifting car which was showcased at the CES earlier this year. BMW terms the design as clear, elegant and timeless. The front carries the kidney grille, which has been reimagined to become the face of the car, along with large windows and slim LED lighting.

BMW calls the nose a single interaction area, as the headlamps are programmed to display an animation when approached. The panels which form the grille, actually house the vast array of cameras and sensors which feed data to the ADAS functions of the car. The grille also displays charging status and even works as turn indicators.

The fresh design of the exterior is matched by a very new and concept car like cabin. Minimalism is the word here, as there are almost no buttons. There is a large central display and a Panoramic Vision HUD, which provides information to the driver in a more detailed and intuitive manner. There is a chunky steering, with off-centre spokes. The front seats are mounted on singular brackets, allowing for extra space for the rear passengers to stretch their legs.

BMW has not revealed exact technical details of the Neue Klasse EV. But claims that it will offer 30 per cent more range, 30 per cent faster charging and 25 per cent more efficiency compared to the current crop of cars. These will come with Gen6 batteries, with cylindrical cells, which are 20 per cent denser, and have the capability to add charge at a rate of 270kW. Claimed range is said to be about 1,000km. These batteries are also cheaper to produce.

More details of the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be revealed when the company reaches production stage. Here in India, BMW currently sells the i7, i4 and iX electric cars, and has the largest market share in the premium electric cars segment.
